Try to remember the date and time of the occurrence, where it happened, the names of any witnesses to the professor's action and what you have done, if anything, in response to the professor's transgression. Gather evidence that supports the complaint. For instance, if the professor harassed you by email, print out the emails. If you feel you were given an unfair grade, gather assignments, tests and papers you have that were used to come up with your grade.
Review your university's policy on filing a formal complaint. Verify that your issue falls under the judicial process. But progress is possible. Let me also add that to a significant extent, good teaching begins with the admissions process, a connection that is seldom grasped. Surely the president must realize that nothing will kill the passion for teaching faster than facing students whose blank stares and awful exams demonstrate imperviousness to any classroom effort.
Encouraging good teaching and achieving a culturally diverse student body can easily collide. For decades, I taught courses on American politics that included students from abroad who were unfamiliar with the nuances of American culture and the English language.
Many of them were smart but, judging by their ill-informed questions and often blank faces, they often failed to understand my lectures and, I suspect, the reading assignments. Try explaining McCarthyism and witch hunting to students who have never encountered these terms or, more likely, vaguely know the concepts but not the American vocabulary. The upshot of having to teach such students is that everything must be slowed down and diluted.
Explaining terms and historical references can also bring classroom tedium, especially to better-prepared students who have heard it before. The bottom line is that professors who are under the gun to improve their teaching should demand students who will appreciate the extra effort. If a resolution is not achieved, discuss your concern with administrative officers responsible for the department or division.
If the issue remains unresolved, you have the option to file a formal complaint. Set your complaint in writing and deliver it to an equity office. An equity officer will speak with you about available options and resources that may best be suited to your concerns. An equity officer, in consultation with senior administration, will decide whether to conduct an investigation, and in the case that an investigation proceeds, the scope of the investigation will be set out.
The investigation will commence. If it is found to be unsubstantiated, it will be dismissed. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of a complaint that has been investigated through the process in this flow-chart, you may request a review by writing to the Office of the Vice-Provost, Students within twenty 20 days of being notified of the result.
If you have a concern about a service or resource on campus, the first step is to raise it with the Director of the office. If the matter is still not resolved, the third step should be to contact the Office of the Vice-Provost, Students at vp.
It is entirely possible for platforms to be abused and lead people to get the wrong ideas about a class, professor or subject. Trying people in the court of public opinion without all the facts or all the context can lead to disastrous results.
There are some instances when taking to a vengeful site like Twitter makes sense, like when a professor or student makes inappropriate comments or remarks and their university does nothing about it.
But the majority of the time, these personal matters do not need to be published. Like everything in life, there are people using social media for better or for worse.
Rather than complaining to Facebook and Twitter followers, students could file a complaint with their school or take their upsets to external and anonymous sites like Rate My Professors.
