Graphing which comes first
This right here is negative 4, negative 5, negative 6, negative 7, negative 8. So we move to the right 6, and then we move down 8. We move to the right 6, and then we move down 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. And we are right over there.
So that is the point , 6 negative 8. You could also look at it this way. The x-coordinate is 6. So you move 6 there. And so we're going to be along this line right over here. And then you can go, and then the y-coordinate is negative 8. So you go down to negative 8. And you say, we're going to be along this line over here. And the place that they intersect is this coordinate. The easiest way I'd like to think of it, move 6 to the right, move along the x-axis, and then move along in the vertical direction along the y-axis.
The example below details how to determine the quadrant location of a point just by thinking about the signs of its coordinates. Thinking about the quadrant location before plotting a point can help you prevent a mistake.
It is also useful knowledge for checking that you have plotted a point correctly. Look at the signs of the x- and y- coordinates. What happens if an ordered pair has an x — or y- coordinate of zero?
A point located on one of the axes is not considered to be in a quadrant. It is simply on one of the axes. Whenever the x- coordinate is 0, the point is located on the y- axis. Similarly, any point that has a y- coordinate of 0 will be located on the x- axis. The coordinate plane is a system for graphing and describing points and lines. Answer Draw a point at this location and label the point 1, 3. It is nothing more than a measuring stick to count how far "up or down" a point is from the horizontal line. The horizontal line, then, is known as the x axis and measures the distance left or right from the vertical line. See what I mean? To plot a single point on the axis, we start with a coordinate, which is a pair of points each representing a distance travelled on an axis.
These black lines are known as the axes. Each one is an axis and the one that goes left right here, this is known as the X axis, or it's typically known as the X axis. In the future it might be called other things, and the one that goes up down in the vertical direction, this is typically known as the Y axis. As you go further in math we might call it other things, but most of the time it's going to be called the Y axis.
So how does three comma five, how do these coordinates specify a point on this plane? Well the way that we typically work it through, the standard way that people will interpret these points, it'll say all right, this first coordinate, this is our X coordinate. This is our X coordinate. You can view it as how far do we move to the right along the X axis. So what you would do is you'd say all right I'm gonna start right here where my axes intersect and I'm gonna go three to the right.
One, two, three. So my X coordinate says, all right my point is going to be this far to the right. This far to the right. So it's gonna be somewhere on this vertical line.
This dotted line that I'm showing. Everything on this vertical line has an X coordinate of three. Now what's the Y coordinate? Another way I should say it, the second number right over here.
This is the Y coordinate. Y coordinate. This tells us how far do we move up. So one way to think about it, you could start back where the axes intersect.
This point is actually called the origin. Let me write that down. That is the origin, and so starting at the origin, move five up.
